Birthday boy Gasquet reaches Eastbourne quarters
Eastbourne, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Richard Gasquet celebrated his 28th birthday with a second-round victory Wednesday at the Aegon International tennis event, a final grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.
The French star fought past capable Aussie Bernard Tomic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at Devonshire Park.
Gasquet's quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be dangerous Slovak Martin Klizan.
Third-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez grounded German Tobias Kamke 7-6 (12-10), 7-5, while Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin upended fourth-seeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 7-5 and Julien Benneteau ousted sixth-seeded fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4. Lopez was last week's grass-court runner-up at The Queen's Club in London.
Other second-round action saw American Sam Querrey get past Dominican lucky loser Victor Estrella Burgos 7-5, retired; France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin dismiss Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 7-6 (7-4); Frenchman Jeremy Chardy defeat Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 7-5; and the aforementioned Klizan erase American Donald Young 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The other quarters will pit Lopez against Chardy, Benneteau versus Querrey and Istomin against Roger-Vasselin.
