Munich, Germany ( - Former champion Mikhail Youzhny dropped his opening match at the $590,000 BMW Open on Wednesday.

The third-seeded Russian received a bye into the second round and claimed a first set tiebreaker before Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

Youzhny won this clay court tournament in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2007 and 2009.

Struff's next opponent will either be Austrian Jurgen Melzer or Lithuanian lucky loser Ricardas Berankis. Melzer and Berankis were tied 2-2 in the third set when play was suspended due to darkness.

This week's champion will earn $107,000.
