Bogota, Colombia (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion and former world No. 1 star Jelena Jankovic was an easy second-round winner Thursday at the Claro Open Colsanitas tennis event.
The top-seeded world No. 9 from Serbia handled Georgian qualifier Sofia Shapatava 6-4, 6-3 on the red clay at Centro de Alto Rendimiento.
Jankovic, who beat Argentine Paula Ormaechea in last year's Bogota finale, will meet Spanish qualifier Lara Arruabarrena in Friday's quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, promising fifth-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia overcame Montenegro's Danka Kovinic 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Arruabarrena dismissed a seventh- seeded Ormaechea 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Also on Day 4, Swiss Romina Oprandi took care of Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-1 and will meet Garcia in the round of eight.
The other quarters will pit sixth-seeded American Vania King against Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino and eighth-seeded Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino versus South African Chanelle Scheepers. Dominguez Lino titled here in 2006 and 2011 and was the runner-up in 2005, while the Bogota native Duque- Marino captured her hometown tournament in 2010.
The 2014 Bogota titlist will earn $43,000.
