Herdman to coach Canadian women's soccer team
(Sports Network) - Canada will host the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup with John Herdman as its manager, after it was revealed Friday he will leave his current job with New Zealand to guide the Canadians.
Herdman has led New Zealand for five years, guiding the squad to the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, as well as the 2008 Olympics. He will take over for Carolina Morace, who helped Canada win the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2011 World Cup.
"It's exciting personally and professionally to go on to coach a team that's got the potential to win a World Cup in their own country," Herdman said, according to FIFA's website.
Herdman will make his debut for Canada against the United States on Sept. 17 in a friendly in Kansas City, Kan. Canada also plays the U.S. on Sept. 22 in Portland, Ore.
