Western New York clinches top spot in WPS
Rochester, NY (Sports Network) - The Western New York Flash secured the best record in Women's Professional Soccer on Sunday after earning a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Beat.
The Flash entered the weekend three points clear of second-place Philadelphia, needing a point to clinch the top spot in the WPS playoffs.
They started well with Alex Morgan setting up Caroline Seger's opening goal in the 37th minute, while Marta scored her 10th goal of the campaign with 15 minutes to play, sealing the win.
Meanwhile, the Independence slumped to a 2-1 defeat at magicJack with Lisa De Vanna scoring a pair of goals before Amy Rodriguez pulled one back in the 79th minute for Philadelphia.
The other match this weekend determined the fourth and final playoff spot with the Boston Breakers knocking off Sky Blue FC, 2-0.
Sky Blue entered the contest needing a point to clinch the fourth playoff place, but Lauren Cheney tallied two goals for Boston to secure a 2-0 win, putting the Breakers into the postseason.
With the regular season now complete, the playoffs will begin on Wednesday with third-place magicJack hosting fourth-place Boston in the first round.
The winner of that match will meet the second-place Independence in the semifinals on August 20, with Western New York set to host the final one week later.
