Sky Blue FC signs English defender Asante

Somerset, NJ (Sports Network) - Sky Blue FC of Women's Professional Soccer has signed English international Anita Asante, who helped the club claim the first WPS title in 2009.

Asante left Sky Blue after the 2009 campaign and spent of parts of last season with the Saint Louis Athletica and the Chicago Red Stars before Gabarra being signed by the Washington Freedom.

Jim Gabarra coached the Freedom last season, but left to join Sky Blue FC this offseason. Asante started 16 games in central defense for Sky Blue FC in 2009.

"I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Anita again," said Gabarra. "We look forward to having her on our back line this season, and it is an extra bonus to see her returning to Sky Blue FC."

Asante has played for England since 2004 and played every minute of four games in the 2007 FIFA World Cup.
