Malaga downs Osasuna to ease relegation fears
Navarra, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Malaga's survival hopes got a big boost on Monday with a 2-0 win at Osasuna behind goals from Samuel and Nordin Amrabat.
Samuel's goal arrived after 14 minutes, but Osasuna was handed some hope when Jesus Gamez received his second yellow card early in the second half, reducing Malaga to 10 men.
However, the hosts failed to take advantage and Amrabat secured the win with a goal in the 66th to take his team three points clear of the relegation places.
Amrabat set up the first goal with a cross that was volleyed home by Samuel, while Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero kept his team in front with a save on Roberto Torres before Jordan Loties hit the post on the rebound.
Gamez received his marching orders after a foul on Torres in the 52nd minute, yet Malaga didn't seem to be troubled by playing with 10 men and the visitors doubled their advantage in the 66th when Amrabat latched on to a pass from Roque Santa Cruz before beating goalkeeper Andres Fernandez.
In Monday's other match, Rayo Vallecano handed Real Sociedad a 3-2 defeat with Ruben Rochina scoring the winning goal in the 67th minute to lift Rayo to within one point of safety.
Sociedad remains in sixth place with the defeat, eight points adrift of the final Champions League place, which is held by Athletic Bilbao.
