Vela's early goal propels Sociedad past Malaga

Malaga, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - A 10th-minute goal from Carlos Vela was enough to hand Real Sociedad a 1-0 win at Malaga on Monday, helping the club's European ambitions.

Sociedad entered the match with just one win from its last five league games, but Vela was on target after 10 minutes when he finished off a pass from Jose Angel near the penalty spot.

Malaga came close in the 32nd minute when a header from Ignacio Camacho just missed the post, while substitute Roque Santa Cruz had a positive impact but was unable to beat goalkeeper Claudio Bravo in his 20 minutes of action.

The loss is the third in the past four games for Malaga, which sits just three points above the relegation places.

Sociedad joins Villarreal on 40 points with the victory, leaving the club four points back of fourth-place Athletic Bilbao.
