Martino named Barcelona manager

Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Barcelona announced Tuesday that Gerardo Martino will become the club's new manager after Tito Vilanova stepped down from the post last week.

The Catalans revealed Friday that Vilanova was leaving the post to continue his fight against cancer, and the club wasted little time in naming his replacement as Martino joins Barca on a two-year contract.

"FC Barcelona have reached an agreement to appoint Gerardo Martino as the new coach of the football team for the next two seasons," read a statement on the club's official website. "This agreement is pending the drafting and signing of the contract."

Martino led Newell's Old Boys to the Argentines Clausura title last season but recently severed ties with the club.

The 50-year-old had been in charge at Newell's for the past two seasons and previously represented the club as a player. He also has managed the Paraguayan national team from 2007 to 2011.
