Stokes' hat trick sees Celtic thump Inverness
Glasgow, Scotland (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Stokes netted a hat trick inside the hour mark on Sunday as Scottish champions Celtic eased to a 6-0 thrashing of Inverness at Celtic Park.
Stokes got the champs off to a quick start with a goal in the 34th minute and scored again on the stroke of halftime to give the Hoops a two-goal margin.
Stokes completed his treble in the 53rd minute. Aaron Doran had an opportunity to get one back for Inverness three minutes later, but he failed to convert the penalty kick.
The missed penalty took the wind out of Inverness' sails and it was all Celtic with 22 minutes to play as Leigh Griffiths found the back of the net before Efe Ambrose and Teemu Pukki both scored in the 78th minute to wrap up the rout for Celtic.
Also in Scotland on Sunday, Callum Paterson netted a first-half brace as Hearts earned a 2-1 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road.
Paterson opened the scoring for Hearts in the 37th minute and he completed his double in the 41st minute. Jordan Forster pulled one back for Hibernian in the 69th minute, but they couldn't find the equalizer as Heats claimed all three points.
