Braga falls to Benfica; Porto returns to summit
Lisbon, Portugal (Sports Network) - It took less than one week for FC Porto to return to the top of the Portuguese Liga as the club claimed a 2-0 win over Olhanense, while Braga, which had gone top last week, dropped a 2-1 decision at Benfica.
The top three teams have stayed in close contact with each other over the past month, but Braga moved to the top after collecting 13 straight wins to overtake Porto.
However, a trip to Benfica snapped that 13-game winning streak as Bruno Cesar scored the winning goal in stoppage time for the hosts, moving them to within a point of the top spot.
Axel Witsel scored from the penalty spot for Benfica before Uwa Echiejile equalized four minutes later for Braga, which falls two points behind Porto.
The defending champions moved to the top after a first-half goal from Lucho Gonzalez was followed by a James Rodriguez strike midway through the second half.
Maritimo remains in fourth place after holding off Academica on Friday for a 1-0 win. Heldon's goal early in the second half provided the difference as both sides finished the match with 10 men.
Sporting Lisbon stayed within a point of Maritimo after Matias Fernandez scored deep into stoppage time for a 1-0 win over Uniao Leiria on Sunday.
The other results from the day include a 3-1 win by Beira Mar over Feirense, Setubal claimed a 1-0 victory over Gil Vicente on an 83rd-minute goal from Ney Santos, Nacional downed Rio Ave, 2-1, and Guimaraes handed Pacos Ferreira a 3-1 defeat.
