Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jack McInerney broke his lengthy scoring
drought in dramatic fashion on Saturday, scoring in the 90th minute to rescue a
point for the Philadelphia Union in 1-1 draw with D.C. United at a soggy RFK
Playing in driving rain, Philadelphia entered the match with momentum following
a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Toronto FC last week, but were a bit shorthanded
missing starters Fabinho and Sheanon Williams.
United had the upper hand early on and grabbed the lead in the 36th minute when
Nick DeLeon collected a loose ball in midfield with space in front of him. He
took a few touches and unleashed a wicked strike from 30 yards out that flew
into the top left corner.
After the intermission, Philadelphia upped the pressure and created several
quality scoring chances, but each time United goalkeeper Bill Hamid had an
The Union finally found a breakthrough in the final minute of regulation when
Kleberson ran down a second ball following a corner kick and whipped a nice
ball into the area. McInerney came crashing into the box from across the field
and powered a header past Hamid to break a 14-match goalless drought.
The result sees the Union jump over New England and into the final playoff spot
in the East with 46 points and two matches remaining, while D.C. United wasted
an opportunity to claim their fourth win of the campaign.
