Watson's brace helps FCD keep El Capitan
Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-half brace from Je-Vaughn Watson helped FC Dallas retain El Capitan with a comfortable 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.
The match was tied at 1-1 with 30 minutes to play, but Houston's David Horst was sent off for a hard challenge on Dallas forward Fabian Castillo, and things quickly fell apart for the Dynamo.
Dallas went on to score three goals in the span of nine minutes to take total control of the match and retain the Civil War-era cannon that goes to the winner of the Texas derby.
In addition to El Capitan, Dallas has now claimed 13 of a possible 15 points from its first five games to remain on top of the Western Conference.
Mauro Diaz helped Dallas take the lead in the 31st minute when he was brought down inside the penalty area by Ricardo Clark, allowing Michel to convert the subsequent spot kick.
But Clark atoned for his error by heading home a free kick from Brad Davis four minutes before halftime to level the contest.
However, everything changed when Horst was sent off as Watson nodded home a free kick from Diaz one minute later to put Dallas on top.
The onslaught continued in the 68th when a corner kick was redirected into his own net by Houston's Giles Barnes, while Diaz set up another goal for Watson two minutes later to make it 4-1.
Eight minutes from time, Boniek Garcia had a chance to pull a goal back for Houston from the penalty spot, but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Chris Seitz, capping a forgettable evening for the home side.
