Roma tops Milan for ninth straight win
Rome, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Roma continued its winning ways on Friday with a 2-0 home victory against AC Milan, moving the club to within five points of leaders Juventus.
Miralem Pjanic opened the scoring for the hosts shortly before halftime, while Gervinho's ninth goal of the campaign arrived midway through the second half to secure a ninth successive victory for Rudi Garcia's men.
Juventus will now attempt to restore its eight-point advantage with a win at relegation-battling Sassuolo on Monday, which would put the club on the verge of clinching a third straight Scudetto.
Pjanic netted his goal in the 43rd minute with a nice individual effort that was helped by some poor Milan defending.
He picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and danced past three defenders to get into the penalty area before slotting his shot past the diving Christian Abbiati in Milan's net.
The lead was doubled in the 65th when Abbiati was able to stop a shot from Francesco Totti, but Gervinho was on hand to follow up and score on the rebound, snapping Milan's five-match winning streak.
Napoli can secure a place in the top three with a win at Inter Milan on Saturday, or if Fiorentina loses at Bologna earlier in the day.
On Sunday, last-place Catania tries to keep its slim survival hopes alive with a win at Hellas Verona, while second-from-the-bottom Livorno hosts Lazio with the club three points from safety.
Parma still has hopes of reaching the Europa League and the club travels to Cagliari in search of three points, Chievo invades Sampdoria, Torino entertains Udinese and Genoa visits Atalanta.
