Garcia takes charge of Roma

Rome, Italy (Sports Network) - Roma confirmed on Wednesday that Rudi Garcia has been named the club's next manager after he signed a two-year contract with the option for another year.

The 49-year-old has spent the past five years at Lille, where he led the club to a league and cup double during the 2010-11 campaign.

"AS Roma announces that it has reached an agreement with Rudi Garcia, who will become the head coach of the first team," said a statement on the club's official website. "The two-year contract will be formalized and deposited in the upcoming days."

Under Garcia, Lille slipped to sixth place in Ligue 1 last season, and the French side is expected to announce his successor in the next few days, with former Montpellier coach Rene Girard, Monchengladbach's Lucien Favre and Francky Dury of Belgian side Zulte-Waregem believed to be in contention for the position.
