Sturridge lifts Liverpool to Aston Villa defeat
Birmingham, England (Sports Network) - Daniel Sturridge netted the only goal of the match on Saturday as Liverpool held on for a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Coming off a 1-0 win over Stoke City last week, Liverpool dominated the match for the majority of the first half, keeping possession for large portions of time before finally scoring with a brilliant offensive move in the 21st minute of play.
Jose Enrique threaded a beautiful ball through the Villa backline to Sturridge, who beat one defender, rounded goalkeeper Brad Guzan and finished the move with a spectacular left-footed strike into the roof of the net.
After the break, Villa upped the pressure and had several quality chances on goal and their best chance came five minutes from time when Christian Benteke latched onto a ball on the right side of the box and ripped it on frame on the half-volley, but Simon Mignolet was there to parry it away.
Despite controlling the play in the second 45 minutes, Villa were unable to find an equalizer as Liverpool improved to six points from its first two matches.
Arsenal 3, Fulham 1
London, England - Lukas Podolski scored on either side of the halftime interval on Saturday as Arsenal claimed a 3-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Coming off a poor performance in their opener last week against Aston Villa, Arsene Wenger's club struck 14 minutes into the match as Olivier Giroud fired his side in front.
Four minutes before the break, the Gunners doubled their lead as Podolski powered one into the roof of the net from distance, and they took the lead into the locker room.
Podolski completed his double in the 68th minute to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Fulham responded with a goal from new signing Darren Bent in the 77th minute, but Arsenal held on for its first three-point effort of the season.
Everton 0, West Bromwich 0
Liverpool, England - Everton was forced to settle for its second consecutive draw on Saturday as the Toffees battled West Bromwich Albion to a scoreless stalemate at Goodison Park.
The home side carried the play for the course of the 90 minutes, firing 22 attempts toward goal and eight on target while keeping 62 percent of the possession, but were unable to find a way to break down the West Brom defense.
The Baggies managed just two shots on Tim Howard's goal and rarely threatened as the clubs settled a point apiece.
Hull City 1, Norwich City 0
Hull, England - Hull City earned its first win of the season on Saturday as the 10-man Tigers held on for a 1-0 result over Norwich City at the KC Stadium.
After being thoroughly outplayed by Chelsea in their opener last week, the home side caught an early break as Yannick Sagbo was dragged down in the box by Norwich's Michael Turner, resulting in a penalty kick.
Robbie Brady stepped up and buried it to give the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute.
Five minutes later, Sagbo was shown his marching orders, reducing Hull to 10 men. But despite the extra man, Norwich was unable to find an equalizer.
Newcastle 0, West Ham 0
Newcastle, England - Newcastle United and West Ham United battled to a scoreless draw on Saturday at St. James' Park.
Both clubs struggled find quality scoring opportunities over the duration of the 90 minutes. Newcastle put 16 attempts toward goal, but zero on frame, while the Hammers only managed one shot on target.
The result leaves the Magpies with one point from their first two matches, while West Ham improves to four points from two games.
Southampton 1, Sunderland 1
Southampton, England - Jose Fonte scored two minutes from time to save a point for Southampton in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Saturday at St. Mary's Stadium.
Coming off a 1-0 loss to Fulham last week, Sunderland got off the mark quickly on Saturday as new signing Emanuele Giaccherini netted his first goal of the season just three minutes in.
The Saints pushed for an equalizer in front of their home fans and it finally came in the 88th minute as a corner kick was nodded into the side netting by Fonte to salvage a point.
The result sees Southampton up to four points from its first two games, while Sunderland has two defeats in two matches.
Stoke City 2, Crystal Palace 1
Stoke-on-Trent, England - Stoke City struck for a pair of second-half tallies on Saturday to earn a 2-1 victory over Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace at the Britannia Stadium.
Crystal Palace opened the scoring in the 31st minute as new signing Marouane Chamakh scored his first goal of the season and the Eagles took the lead into the locker room.
But Stoke found an equalizer in the 58th minute through Charlie Adam, and collected the winning goal four minutes later as Ryan Shawcross corralled a pass from Robert Huth and powered it into the bottom left corner to secure his club's first three points of the season.
