Twente returns to winning ways against AZ
Enschede, Netherlands (Sports Network) - After suffering its only blemish of the season last weekend in a 1-0 defeat to Ajax, Twente bounced back in a big way by handing AZ Alkmaar a 3-0 thrashing on Sunday.
Nacer Chadli's third goal of the campaign midway through the opening half put Twente into the lead, and things came apart for the visitors after the break.
Adam Maher received a red card in the 51st minute for AZ, while Jozy Altidore also got his marching orders just one minute later for his second bookable offense, leaving the club with nine players.
Twente easily extended the lead from there with Dusan Tadic converting a penalty kick on the hour mark before Luc Castaignos capped the scoring two minutes later for the home side, which holds a three-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie table.
PSV Eindhoven moved into a tie for second place after rolling over NAC, 4-0, courtesy of goals from Jeremain Lens, Ola Toivonen, Mark Van Bommel and Georgino Wijnaldum.
Ajax fell five points off the pace after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Utrecht with the equalizer for the visitors coming on a second-half own goal from Fabian Sporkslede.
Sunday's other match saw Feyenoord earn a 2-2 draw at Groningen despite playing nearly 65 minutes with 10 men.
Terence Kongolo was sent off in the 26th minute for Feyenoord with the match tied at 1-1. But after Groningen took the lead before halftime through Virgil van Dijk, Bruno Indi netted the equalizer in the 90th minute.
