Wilshere's double puts Arsenal atop Group F

London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Jack Wilshere scored twice at the Emirates in Champions League play on Tuesday to see Arsenal climb to the top of Group F with a 2-0 defeat of Marseille.

The England midfielder opened the scoring in the first minute when he broke free on the right flank before cutting the ball back onto his left foot and curling a superb finish past Steve Mandanda at the far post.

It looked as though Arsenal would seize control of the match in the 37th minute when the Gunners were awarded a penalty following Nicolas N'Koulou's foul on Aaron Ramsey, but Mesut Ozil's ensuing attempt from the spot was saved by Mandanda.

The spurned opportunity ultimately made no difference as the Gunners cruised to victory thanks to 65th-minute goal from Wilshere, who got on the end of Ozil's square pass to cooly collect his brace.

Arsenal improves to 12 points to move to the top of Group F while Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 defeat of Napoli at Signal Iduna Park sees the two sides go level on nine points apiece.

Chelsea, meanwhile, clinched a spot in the knockout round despite suffering a 1-0 loss at FC Basel. Mohamed Salah struck in the 87th minute for the Swiss side to deny the Blues a point, but Schalke's 0-0 draw with Steaua Bucharest in Group E's other fixture means that Chelsea will still advance.

AC Milan and Ajax both picked up wins on Tuesday to remain neck-and-neck in their fight to join Barcelona in the knockout round. Milan ran out to a convincing 3-0 victory over Celtic at Parkhead while Ajax managed to claim a shock 2-1 win over the Catalans to keep pace with the Italian side in Group H.

And Group G remained unchanged after Zenit played to a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid and FC Porto was held to a 1-1 draw by Austria Vienna.
