Spurs edge Sheriff to remain perfect in Europa League
London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Tottenham preserved its perfect record in Europa League play this season by earning a 2-1 win over Sheriff Tiraspol at White Hart Lane on Thursday.
After a scoreless opening period, the breakthrough finally came at the hour mark when Christian Eriksen's ball into the box was not properly dealt with by the Sheriff defense, which allowed Erik Lamela to fire home a first-time shot after drifting in from the right flank.
Lamela had a hand in the second goal seven minutes later when he darted into a dangerous area on the dribble only to be tripped up in the box, which allowed Jermain Defoe to convert the ensuing penalty to put Spurs firmly in the driver's seat.
The visitors pulled one back in the 72nd minute when Ismail Isa pounced on a save from Brad Friedel and stuffed home a shot with an acrobatic finish, but Tottenham closed out the match to remain atop the Group K table with 12 points from four matches.
