United's Giggs gets one-year extension
Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United confirmed on Friday that midfielder Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year extension with the club, keeping him at Old Trafford past his 40th birthday.
Giggs is the most decorated player in British football history with his next first-team appearance for United being his 1,000th senior appearance.
"What can I say about Ryan that hasn't already been said? He is a marvelous player and an exceptional human being," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has, and continues to, look after himself."
"I am feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team," Giggs told Manchester United's official website. "This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season."
Manchester United holds a 12-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premiership table and Giggs would claim his 13th league title should the Red Devils hold on to the top spot.
Ferguson also confirmed that Giggs would make his 1,000th appearance for the club either on Saturday against Norwich City or next Tuesday against Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
