Adriano's contract terminated by Corinthians

Sao Paulo, Brazil (Sports Network) - Former Brazil international Adriano had his contract terminated by Corinthians as the striker continues to struggle to regain his fitness.

The 30-year-old joined Corinthians from Roma in May 2011 but sustained an Achilles injury that has caused him to gain weight and lose his match fitness.

Adriano's battle with weight problems and depression has become an issue in recent years, and Corinthians sporting director Roberto de Andrade didn't feel as though the former Inter Milan frontman was doing enough to warrant his contract.

"Corinthians did everything to help Adriano," De Andrade told Radio Globo. "He said that himself.

"We did everything in our power to make him fit again. We came to the conclusion it was best to terminate the contract and he agreed."

Adriano enjoyed his best years at Inter, where he scored 48 goals in 123 games for the Nerazzurri before returning to Brazil to play for Flamengo.

A failed stint at Roma followed before his arrival at Corinthians, which consisted of just a handful of appearances.

His contract with the club was set to expire in June.
