Newell's nips Velez Sarsfield to stay unbeaten
Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Maxi Rodriguez scored in the first minute and Newell's posted its eighth shutout in 10 matches this season to nip Velez Sarsfield, 1-0, on Sunday in Argentina's Clausura.
Newell's remained undefeated, winning for the sixth time against four draws to stay two points clear of Racing at the top of the standings after 10 matches.
Argentina international Rodriguez scored his first goal for Newell's since his return from Liverpool, as he converted a pass from Ignacio Scocco. Rodriguez was scoreless in his first seven appearances in his second stint for the club.
Velez Sarsfield lost its second straight to fall five points off the summit in fourth place.
Belgrano continued its climb up the table Sunday, as Sergio Rodriguez, Victor Aquino and Guillermo Farre scored in a 3-1 win over Boca Juniors. Belgrano won for the fourth time during a five-match undefeated run and is three points off the top in third. Boca is winless in three and five off the pace in fifth.
Also Sunday, Luciano Leguizamon and Osmar Ferreyra scored as Independiente won 2-0 over Atletico Rafaela for its second straight victory, and Carlos Sanchez scored twice as River Plate hammered Godoy Cruz, 5-0.
Racing temporarily moved into the top place Saturday, as Luciano Vietto scored six minutes from time in a 1-0 win over Colon. Racing won its third successive match to stay within striking distance of Newell's in second place.
Also Saturday, Humberto Osorio scored twice for 10-man San Martin in a 2-1 win over All Boys, Duvan Zapata scored in the 90th minute as Estudiantes defeated Quilmes, 2-1, and San Lorenzo tied Arsenal, 0-0.
On Friday, Silvio Romero and Mario Regueiro scored as Lanus downed Union, 2-0, and Tigre remained winless after a 0-0 draw against Argentinos Juniors.
