Independiente's Milito announces retirement

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Independiente captain Gabriel Milito announced on Monday that he will retire at the end of the Argentinean season.

The 31-year-old was released by Barcelona last year after spending four seasons at the Camp Nou, and he decided to return to his first club, Independiente, in order to resume his career.

Milito sustained a serious knee injury in the 2008 Champions League semifinals while playing with Barcelona that kept him on the sidelines for 19 months.

And the former Argentina international has decided that his health is not where it needs to be, forcing him to walk away at the end of the season, which finishes up in two weeks with Independiente sitting 17th in the league table.

Milito also played four seasons with Real Zaragoza and earned 42 caps on the international level for Argentina.
