Boca edges Estudiantes to claim top spot
La Plata, Argentina (Sports Network) - Boca Juniors moved into first place of the Argentine Clausura on Sunday by easing past Estudiantes with a 3-0 win at the Estadio Unico de La Plata.
Santiago Silva and Pablo Ledesma put the visitors in front with goals in the ninth and 24th minutes, while Pablo Mouche sealed all three points with the nail in the coffin midway through the second half.
The result not only bumps Boca up to first place on 17 points, but it also hands Estudiantes its first loss of the season. Juan Manuel Azconzabal's side sits fifth on 15 points.
Velez Sarsfield and Newell's both kept pace with Boca as they picked up 2-0 wins over San Lorenzo and Racing, respectively. Newell's has won four straight to sit second on 16 points, while Velez Sarfield occupies third on 15 points.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Arsenal secured its fourth straight win with a 2-0 victory at All Boys, and San Martin played to a 2-2 draw with Colon at the Estadio del Bicentenario.
Andres Chavez bagged a brace to help Banfield climb out of the cellar with a resounding 5-2 victory over Olimpo on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Godoy Cruz played to its fourth draw in a row with a 1-1 tie at Union, Fabian Bordagaray scored twice in the first half to help Argentinos Juniors to a 2-1 defeat of Tigre, and Independiente posted a 2-0 victory over Atletico Rafaela.
On Friday, Marco Perez converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to see Belgrano over Lanus, 1-0.
