Butler leaving Horizon League for Atlantic 10
Newport News, VA (Sports Network) - Butler University has decided to leave the Horizon League and will join the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Butler features 19 athletic teams, including 17 that will participate in the A-10, but is best known for its men's basketball program that reached the NCAA Tournament championship game in the spring of 2010 and 2011.
"Butler University is pleased to be the newest member of the Atlantic 10 Conference," said Butler president James Danko in a statement. "The universities in this conference are strong academically and they value the student-athlete experience. Butler fits well with them and we look forward to joining their tradition of excellence."
The move will become official on July 1, 2013.
"Moving to the Atlantic 10 allows us to associate and compete with institutions with outstanding academic profiles and values," said Butler athletic director Barry Collier.
Butler will become the fourth midwestern school in the Atlantic 10, joining Saint Louis, Dayton and Xavier.
"Butler is a distinguished institution of higher education, it takes the academic success of its student athletes seriously and its athletic programs have achieved notable success," said Father Michael J. Graham, Xavier University president and chair of the Atlantic 10 council of presidents. "We are excited, as well, to be able to add Indianapolis to our conference footprint and look forward to beginning competition with Butler in 2013-14."
The Atlantic 10 had been looking for a replacement for Temple, which is leaving to join the Big East. The Owls, who were also part of the Mid-American Conference in football, will play football in the Big East next year while joining the league in all other sports in 2013-14.
"We are proud of the role the Horizon League played in providing a platform for Butler to significantly improve its athletics programs and achieve the highest level of national competitiveness in men's basketball," said commissioner Jon LeCrone in a separate statement.
