Texas State to join Sun Belt Conference
San Marcos, TX (Sports Network) - Texas State is joining the Sun Belt Conference.
The move is effective July 1, 2013.
It will be Texas State's third conference in three years.
Texas State is moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision starting this fall and is leaving the Southland Conference to play in the Western Athletic Conference. Its stay in the WAC will last just one year.
"Texas State is a great addition to the Sun Belt Conference as the Bobcat athletic program is destined for success in the Football Bowl Subdivision," said Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson, who took over after 18 years as commissioner of the WAC. "The Sun Belt Conference's rise to prominence will continue with Texas State as part of our league."
The school has a total of 16 varsity programs and its football team reached the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals in 2005.
