Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia held off Russia's Tatyana Pushkareva to capture the women's title at the Boston Marathon, while Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya claimed the men's crown in record fashion.
Cheruiyot, who is no relation to four-time Boston winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, finished in a time of two hours, five minutes and 52 seconds, smashing the previous record of 2:07:14 set by his similar namesake in 2006.
"I was not thinking about 2:05, I wanted to show my talent," said Cheruiyot, who earned a first prize of $150,000 plus a course record bonus of $25,000. continue>>
London, England (Sports Network) - Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede won his first London Marathon on Sunday, breaking Kenya's six-year reign in the event, while Russians Liliya Shobukhova and Inga Abitova finished 1-2 in the women's race.
Kebede, who was second to 2008 Olympic champion Samuel Wanjiru in the London Marathon last year, ran the course in two hours, five minutes and 19 seconds.
Kebede was just 10 seconds back of Wanjiru last year, but Sunday won in convincing fashion. He finished more than a minute in front of his closest competitor, Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai, who crossed the line in 2:06:23. Moroccan Jaouad Gharib, 37, was third in 2:06:55.& continue>>
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya captured the men's title at the Chicago Marathon for a second straight year, while Russia's Liliya Shobukhova also successfully defended her women's crown.
Wanjiru finished in a time of two hours, six minutes and 24 seconds, edging London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia by 19 seconds. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia was third, another 1:27 off the pace.
Kebede and Wanjiru were running side-by-side heading to the finish at Grant Park, but Wanjiru was able to pull away down the stretch. Wanjiru also won the Olympic Marathon at Beijing two years ago and the London title in 2009. continue>>
