Chicago, IL (Sports Network) -
Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya captured the men's title at the Chicago Marathon for a second straight year, while Russia's Liliya Shobukhova also successfully defended her women's crown.
Wanjiru finished in a time of two hours, six minutes and 24 seconds, edging London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia by 19 seconds. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia was third, another 1:27 off the pace.
Kebede and Wanjiru were running side-by-side heading to the finish at Grant Park, but Wanjiru was able to pull away down the stretch. Wanjiru also won the Olympic Marathon at Beijing two years ago and the London title in 2009.
