Boston, MA (Sports Network) -
Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia held off Russia's Tatyana Pushkareva to capture the women's title at the Boston Marathon, while Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya claimed the men's crown in record fashion.
Cheruiyot, who is no relation to four-time Boston winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, finished in a time of two hours, five minutes and 52 seconds, smashing the previous record of 2:07:14 set by his similar namesake in 2006.
"I was not thinking about 2:05, I wanted to show my talent," said Cheruiyot, who earned a first prize of $150,000 plus a course record bonus of $25,000.
