Russia's Ahn breezes into 1000m final

Sochi, Russia (SportsNetwork.com) - Russian short track speedskater Viktor Ahn earned one of five berths in the final race of the men's 1,000 meters Saturday at the Sochi Olympics.

The Russian won the second of two semifinal heats with a time of 1 minute, 24.102 seconds to beat China's Wu Dajing, who also made it to the final. Ahn has a chance to claim his sixth Olympic medal when the final race of the 1,000 is run on Saturday. He won bronze in the 1,500 meters earlier in Sochi.

Ahn won four medals, including gold in the 1,000, for South Korea at the 2006 Turin Games. However he failed to qualify for the 2010 Olympics and after a falling out with his South Korea, the 28-year-old Russian citizen decided to compete for this year's host nation.

South Korea's Sin Da Woon claimed the second final berth from the first heat with a time of 1:25.564 -- .218 seconds slower than Russia's Vladimir Grigorev. Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands was also awarded a spot in the final out of Heat 1 after it was ruled he was interfered with by South Korea's Lee Han-Bin.
