U.S. suffers straight-sets loss to Cuba

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - The United States women's indoor volleyball team suffered a straight-sets loss to Cuba on Monday.

Cuba, the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist, rolled to a 25-15, 26-24, 25-17 victory over an American team still reeling from the loss of a former teammate's father in a fatal stabbing in Beijing.

"We didn't play very well in our reception, and that stopped our attacking force," USA coach Lang Ping said. "We didn't serve well to put pressure on our opponent."

The U.S. will next play Venezuela on Wednesday.

Serbia and Italy were also shutout winners Monday, with Serbia cruising to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 victory over Algeria and Italy getting past Kazakhstan 25-19, 25-15, 25-21.

Brazil topped Russia in three sets, while China was a five-set winner over Poland, and Japan cruised past Venezuela in three sets.
