Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Tim Brabants of Great Britain won gold in the men's kayak single 1,000 meters race Friday as the medal rounds in flatwater canoe/kayak began at the Beijing Games.
Brabants posted a winning time of 3 minutes, 26.323 seconds to defeat Norway's Eirik Veraas Larsen by 1.019 seconds. Australia's Ken Wallace finished in 3:27.485 for the bronze.
For Brabants, the defending world champion, it was his first Olympic gold after earning the bronze in the 1,000 at the 2000 Sydney Games.
Canada's Adam van Koeverden was a medal favorite in this event after taking the bronze in Athens, but finished eighth.
"I didn't burn out. I'm not exhausted. I've been sleeping well. I have absolutely no excuse," said van Koeverden.
Van Koeverden is still favored to win gold in Saturday's single 500m race, as he won the Olympic event four years ago and broke his own world record at the distance earlier in the Beijing competition.
Hungary's Attila Vajda won gold in the men's canoe single 1,000m, turning in a time of 3:50.467 to place a healthy 2.284 seconds ahead of Spain's David Cal. Thomas Hall of Canada won the bronze medal with a time of 3:53.653.
Vajda's gold was the first for the Hungarians at these Games.
Germany won the women's kayak four 500m race, earning a close victory over the Hungarians for gold. The Germans crossed the line in 1:32.231 to defeat Hungary by just .740 seconds. Australia secured the bronze with a time of 1:34.704.
The Germans also won gold in the men's kayak double 1,000m, as Martin Hollstein and Andreas Ihle paddled to a 3:11.809 time. Denmark finished in silver position and Italy took the bronze.
Belarus picked up a gold medal in the men's canoe double 1,000m, completing the race in 3:36.365. Germany took silver and Hungary won the bronze medal.
The final race of the day was also won by the Belarusians as they took the men's kayak four 1,000m with a time of 2:55.714. Slovakia crossed the line just .879 seconds later for silver and the Germans earned another medal with a third-place finish.
