Arakawa grabs gold
On a night when the leaders and favorites fumbled and fell during their routines, Japan's Shizuka Arakawa won the gold medal in women's figure skating with a near flawless performance.

American Sasha Cohen, the leader by a slim margin after the short program, fell on her first jump and stumbled on her second -- a disastrous beginning that ended with the U.S. champion winning silver.

Russian Irina Slutskaya, second entering the free skate Thursday, also fell during her routine. The silver medalist in 2002 and favorite upon arrival in Torino, Slutskaya won bronze.
