Athens, Greece (Sports Network)- Australia won its first ever Olympic gold medal in men's field hockey with a 2-1 golden goal victory over the Netherlands on Friday night.

Aussie Jamie Dwyer fired home a penalty corner winner with the last play of the first period of golden goal extra time, ending an exciting match and giving his team a victory over the defending Olympic champions.

Ronald Brouwer gave the Netherlands a 1-0 lead in the first half with a late goal, handing his team a lead it probably didn't deserve. The Aussies, who outplayed their opponent before the half, evened the score with Travis Brooks' goal in the first two minutes of the second.

Dwyer set that play up, and later won the game by firing a shot through the legs of Dutch goalie Guus Vogels.
