Athens, Greece (Sports Network)-
The United States won basketball gold on Saturday. The U.S. women, that is.
One day after their male counterparts were outclassed by Argentina in a historic semifinal loss, the American women won their third straight Olympic gold medal with a 74-63 victory over Australia, proving that U.S. basketball is alive and well, albeit with fewer dunks and more ponytails.
"I am not thinking at all about whether we are better than the men's team," U.S. forward Tamika Catchings said. "I know we are very lucky to be getting up on that podium."
It was the second straight time the U.S. handed Australia a gold medal game defeat, also beating the host Aussies at the Sydney Games in 2000. Tina Thompson led the way with 18 points, including a key three-pointer that stretched the U.S. lead from six points to nine with 2:43 remaining.
