Athens, Greece (Sports Network)-
Stefano Baldini of Italy captured the final event of the 2004 Athens Olympics with a victory in the men's marathon, but the race was marred by a spectator attacking what turned out to be the bronze medalist.
Baldini finished the course from Marathon to the Panathinaiko Stadium, venue for the 1896 Games, in a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 55 seconds.
American Meb Keflezighi took the silver medal with a time of 2:11:29, giving the United States a men's marathon medal for the first time since Frank Shorter won silver at the Montreal Games in 1976.
"I was delighted to get the silver," Keflezighi said. "Finally my hard work paid of. It was my goal for the whole year. It was a great race."
