Buffalo Sabres (14-1-1) at Carolina Hurricanes (9-6-3), 7 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres try to extend their latest winning
streak to four games tonight when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes at the
Buffalo has won the last three matches in overtime -- trying the NHL record --
after suffering its first regulation loss of the season. On Saturday, Daniel
Briere's power-play goal 21 seconds into OT lifted the Sabres to a 5-4
win over Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center.
Briere finished with two goals for the Sabres, as he also tied the match late
in the third period. Martin Biron stopped 26 shots in net for his fifth win of
Paul Gaustad, Pominville and Drew Stafford tallied the regulation goals for
Buffalo while Brian Campbell added two assists.
On the injury front, Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller missed the game with an
abdominal strain and is day-to-day.
On the milestone watch, Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen is expected to play
in his 1,252nd NHL game, which will be the most in league history by a
European-trained player. He is currently tied with Jari Kurri for the mark.
Buffalo, which is 9-0-0 on the road, will host Ottawa on Wednesday.
Carolina, meanwhile, has won its last two games. On Saturday, Cam Ward made
18 saves and six different players tallied goals as the Hurricanes skated past
the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-2, at RBC Center.
Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Justin Williams, Ray Whitney and
Rod Brind'Amour while Eric Belanger, Kevyn Adams and Chad LaRose rounded out
the scoring in the third period.
Erik Cole added two assists.
The Hurricanes were afforded 13 power plays, and they converted two of them.
Carolina will host the NY Rangers on Wednesday.
Buffalo is 2-0 against Carolina this season, after the Canes defeated the
Sabres in last spring's Eastern Conference finals.
