Washington Capitals (6-4-4) at Carolina Hurricanes (7-6-3), 7 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals will aim for their first three-game
winning streak of the season tonight when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes
at the RBC Center.
The Capitals are coming off Monday's overtime victory over the visiting Ottawa
Senators. Chris Clark's tally on a deflection 1:33 into the extra session sent
Washington to a dramatic 4-3 win at the Verizon Center.
Alexander Ovechkin scored twice, including the tying goal with 24.4 seconds
remaining, to send the game into overtime.
On the game-winner, Caps forward Alexander Semin sent a floating wrister from
the boards near the right point toward the net. Clark, stationed at the edge
of the right circle, redirected the puck off the shaft of his stick past a
confused and lunging Martin Gerber.
Matt Pettinger got the other goal, while Semin assisted on the final three
scores for the Capitals. Brent Johnson stopped all 21 shots he faced in relief
of Olaf Kolzig to pick up the win for Washington, winners in three of their
last four. Kolzig had a rough night, giving up three goals on five shots
before hitting the showers.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will try to rebound from a loss when they begin a
three-game homestand tonight.
Carolina was dealt a shootout loss on Tuesday night in New Jersey. John
Madden's goal in the sixth round of the shootout sent the Devils to the 3-2
win at Continental Airlines Arena. Following a save by Devils netminder Martin
Brodeur on Carolina's Scott Walker, Madden cruised in on Hurricanes goaltender
Cam Ward and put a wrister through an open space between Ward's arm and body
to end the game.
Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour lit the lamp and Ray Whitney picked up his team
co-leading 15th assist. Ward absorbed the loss in a solid effort, stopping 18-
of-20 shots for Carolina, which has dropped two of its last three.
Washington defeated Carolina, 5-2, on October 7 in DC and has won four of the
last seven meetings.
