Carolina Hurricanes (18-8-2) at San Jose Sharks (12-12-4), 10:30 p.m.
(Sports Network) - Joe Thornton hopes he can continue to be a good luck charm
for this new team, as his San Jose Sharks host the Carolina Hurricanes
The Sharks acquired Thornton last week from Boston in exchange for left wing
Marco Sturm, center Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart.
Prior to the trade, San Jose had lost 10 consecutive games, the longest skid
for the Sharks since dropping 13 straight tilts during the 1992-93 campaign.
Since the deal, the Sharks have won four in a row and are playing with a newly
Thornton posted two assists in the latest win, a 6-2 home victory over the
Florida Panthers on Thursday. Thornton has registered a point in each of his
four games with the Sharks, notching a goal and seven assists during the
Mark Smith scored twice during a four-goal surge in the second period of
Thursday's game and Evgeni Nabokov made 34 saves.
Tonight's test is the third of a four-game homestand for the Sharks, who are
6-3-2 at the Shark Tank this year. San Jose completes stand next Friday
against the Washington Capitals.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have won two straight contests, including Thursday's
3-2 win in Los Angeles.
Erik Cole scored two goals and Martin Gerber made 35 saves to help Carolina
defeat the Kings at Staples Center.
Justin Williams added his 12th tally of the season and Eric Staal notched his
21st assist for Carolina.
Tonight's test is the finale of a six-game road trip for the Hurricanes, who
are 9-4-2 as the visitor this year.
San Jose has won four of six and seven of the last 12 meetings against the
Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have dropped three straight and four of their last
five at the Shark Tank.
