NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, December 10th (All times eastern)

Carolina Hurricanes (18-8-2) at San Jose Sharks (12-12-4), 10:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Joe Thornton hopes he can continue to be a good luck charm for this new team, as his San Jose Sharks host the Carolina Hurricanes

The Sharks acquired Thornton last week from Boston in exchange for left wing Marco Sturm, center Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart.

Prior to the trade, San Jose had lost 10 consecutive games, the longest skid for the Sharks since dropping 13 straight tilts during the 1992-93 campaign. Since the deal, the Sharks have won four in a row and are playing with a newly found confidence.

Thornton posted two assists in the latest win, a 6-2 home victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday. Thornton has registered a point in each of his four games with the Sharks, notching a goal and seven assists during the string.

Mark Smith scored twice during a four-goal surge in the second period of Thursday's game and Evgeni Nabokov made 34 saves.

Tonight's test is the third of a four-game homestand for the Sharks, who are 6-3-2 at the Shark Tank this year. San Jose completes stand next Friday against the Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have won two straight contests, including Thursday's 3-2 win in Los Angeles.

Erik Cole scored two goals and Martin Gerber made 35 saves to help Carolina defeat the Kings at Staples Center.

Justin Williams added his 12th tally of the season and Eric Staal notched his 21st assist for Carolina.

Tonight's test is the finale of a six-game road trip for the Hurricanes, who are 9-4-2 as the visitor this year.

San Jose has won four of six and seven of the last 12 meetings against the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have dropped three straight and four of their last five at the Shark Tank.
