NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, April 11th (All times eastern)

Atlanta Thrashers (38-32-7) at Tampa Bay Lightning (42-31-5), 7:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers and Tampa Bay Lightning will get together at St. Pete Times Forum tonight in a matchup with playoff implications.

The Thrashers desperately need a win tonight if they want to earn a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Tampa Bay has 89 points and currently holds the eighth and final postseason berth in the East, while Atlanta is six points behind. Atlanta, which has never made the playoffs since joining the NHL for the 1999-2000 season, has one game in hand over the Lightning.

The Lightning can clinch a postseason berth with a regulation win this evening and a Toronto loss to Florida.

The Thrashers are coming off Saturday's win over visiting Carolina. Mike Dunham made 23 saves and three different Thrashers scored in the first period, as Atlanta kept its playoff hopes alive with the 5-2 win at Philips Arena.

Marc Savard, Serge Aubin and Ilya Kovalchuk all lit the lamp in the opening period for the Thrashers, who have won three of their last four games and four in a row at home.

Peter Bondra and Scott Mellanby also scored for the Thrashers.

Meanwhile, the Lightning had a three-game winning streak with Sunday's loss at Florida. Juraj Kolnik scored twice, including the go ahead goal with 5:05 left in the third as the Panthers earned a 6-3 victory.

Vaclav Prospal posted a goal and an assist while Martin St. Louis also lit the lamp for the Lightning, who had their three-game winning streak halted. John Grahame allowed five goals on 47 shots faced in defeat.

The Lightning have won five of seven matchups with the Thrashers this season.
