NHL Preview from The Sports Network

San Jose Sharks (39-26-11) at Phoenix Coyotes (36-36-5), 10 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks seek their fifth straight win tonight when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Glendale Arena.

San Jose is currently tied with Edmonton for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race at 91 points -- two ahead of ninth-place Vancouver.

On Sunday, Jonathan Cheechoo scored his 49th goal of the season and Joe Thornton had two assists to lift the Sharks to 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars at HP Pavilion.

Thornton increased his league-leading assist total to 85 and his team-leading point total to 113.

Vesa Toskala made 21 saves for the Sharks, who have won four straight -- outscoring their opponents a combined 14-4 over that span.

The Sharks will open a huge home-and-home against Vancouver on Wednesday at GM Place.

Phoenix, meanwhile, has lost three straight games, including Saturday's 3-2 shootout setback against Dallas. Jussi Jokinen and Bill Guerin scored in the shootout to lift the Stars.

Shane Doan posted a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who lost their third straight. Bill Thomas added their other goal and Curtis Joseph stopped 27- of-31 shots.

The Coyotes will visit Colorado on Tuesday.

Phoenix has handled San Jose extremely well this season, going 6-1 in the series.
