San Jose Sharks (26-21-8) at Phoenix Coyotes (27-28-3), 8 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes try to pick up the pieces and end a
three-game slide tonight when they welcome the San Jose Sharks to Glendale
The Coyotes have lost the last two matches under the dark cloud that came
about when associate coach Rick Tocchet was tied to an alleged gambling ring
based in New Jersey. Tocchet was granted a leave of absence by NHL
commissioner Gary Bettman, but since then head coach Wayne Gretzky has been
reported to have knowledge of the gaming operation. Gretzky's wife, Janet
Jones Gretzky, has been tied to the ring as a client.
On Thursday the Coyotes dropped a 5-1 tilt to the Dallas Stars in the seventh
portion of an eight-game pre-Olympic homestand. Niko Kapanen registered his
first career hat trick to lift the Stars.
Geoff Sanderson tallied the only goal for Phoenix, which has now lost five of
its last six games overall. Curtis Joseph allowed five goals on 30 shots in
Phoenix will host Dallas on March 2 in its first game back from the Olympic
San Jose, meanwhile, has won two straight contests on the heels of a three-
game slide. On Friday, Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek each had two goals
to lead the Sharks to a 6-3 win over the Stars at HP Pavilion.
Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists, Patrick Marleau had four helpers and
Alyn McCauley netted the other goal for the Sharks.
Backup goaltender Vesa Toskala stopped 24 shots for San Jose.
San Jose will host Detroit on February 28 to return from the break.
Phoenix is 4-0 against San Jose this season.
