New Jersey Devils (33-20-11-1) at Florida Panthers (24-26-14-3), 7:30 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils try to halt a three-game losing
streak tonight when they visit the Florida Panthers at the Office Depot
With 78 points, the Devils are sixth in the Eastern Conference standings --
four behind Boston for fifth. Jersey trails Philadelphia by six points in the
Atlantic Division chase.
On Monday, the Devs dropped a dramatic 2-1 contest in Montreal, as Jason Ward
scored with just 24 seconds remaining to lift the Canadiens. Turner
Stevenson scored the lone New Jersey goal in the loss, the Devils' third
straight. Martin Brodeur was solid in net with 37 saves, but New Jersey was
unable to win its fourth straight over the Canadiens.
Montreal moved to within two points of the Devils in the East standings.
Earlier Monday, the Devils acquired forward Viktor Kozlov from the Panthers in
exchange for forward Christian Berglund and defenseman Victor Uchevatov. The
oft-injured Kozlov has 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 48 games this
season, and is currently recovering from a concussion.
The Devils, who have lost four of their last five road games, will visit Tampa
Florida, meanwhile, is eight points behind the NY Islanders for the final
playoff spot in the East. The Panthers are 4-1-3 in their last eight games.
On Tuesday, All-Star Roberto Luongo made 29 saves to post his career-high
seventh shutout of the season, leading Florida to a 1-0 win over Washington at
the MCI Center.
Olli Jokinen scored on the power play for the Panthers, who snapped a two-game
winless streak (0-1-1) overall. Luongo, who has four shutouts in his last
seven games, ranks first in the NHL with 1,923 saves and places second with a
.936 save percentage.
The Panthers, 4-1-1 in their last six home tilts, will host Tampa Bay on
Florida and New Jersey are 1-1 against each other this season, and the road
team has won seven of the last 10 meetings.
