NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, December 10th (All times eastern)

Los Angeles Kings (14-10-1-2) at Atlanta Thrashers (14-11-3-1), 7:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers seek their third consecutive win tonight when they welcome the Los Angeles Kings to Philips Arena.

The matchup is a surprising clash of two first-place teams. Atlanta, with 32 points, is one ahead of Tampa Bay atop the Southeast Division, while Los Angeles, with 31 points, is two up on San Jose in the Pacific.

The Thrashers have defeated Anaheim and Florida during their recent streak, after dropping two straight. On Saturday, Slava Kozlov scored with 2:03 remaining in overtime to lift Atlanta to a 4-3 road win over the Panthers.

Jeff Cowan, Shawn McEachern and Ben Simon also scored for the Thrashers, while Pasi Nurminen made 31 saves in the victory. Nurminen's 13 wins place him one behind a four-way tie for first in the National Hockey League.

The Thrashers will attempt to win three straight games for the second time this season. From November 16-23 they set a club record with four victories in a row.

Atlanta, 8-5-2 at Philips Arena, will host woeful Pittsburgh on Friday.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak halted on Monday, as it opened a four-game road trip with a 3-2 overtime loss to Detroit. The Red Wings' Brett Hull tallied the game-winner and moved into third place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list in the process.

Mike Cammalleri and Martin Straka scored third-period goals to send the game into OT for Los Angeles, which still earned a point for the fifth time in six tries (4-1-0-1). Cammalleri has three goals in his last two games, while Straka marked for the third consecutive game. Straka has also added two assists in the four games since he was acquired from Pittsburgh.

Roman Cechmanek finished with 17 saves for Los Angeles.

The Kings, 7-4-0-2 on the road, will visit Nashville on Thursday.

Los Angeles swept two games from Atlanta last season and has won three straight in the series -- outscoring the Thrashers 12-2. The Kings have won six of the seven all-time clashes, including all three played at Philips Arena.
