San Jose Sharks (1-5-4-0) at Florida Panthers (4-5-2-0), 7:30 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks try and stop a seven-game winless
string tonight when they continue their seven-game road trip in Sunrise
against the Florida Panthers at the Office Depot Center.
On Thursday, though, San Jose became the first team this season not to lose to
the Tampa Bay Lightning, skating to a 2-2 tie at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Wayne Primeau and Patrick Marleau scored for San Jose, which is 0-3-4 in its
last seven and closed out the opening month of the season with a dismal 1-5-4
Evgeni Nabokov made 33 saves for the Sharks, who were outshot 10-1 during the
game's first seven minutes. Nabokov is mired in a 15-game winless streak
(0-8-6-1) dating back to February 27 of last season.
San Jose center Vincent Damphousse (420 goals) has not scored a goal in his
past 17 games dating back to last season. He does lead the team with five
The Sharks are 1-1 on their current trek that will also head to Atlanta, New
Jersey, Boston and Washington during the venture.
Florida, meanwhile, picked up its third win in its last five games on
Thursday, as Byron Richie scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to
lead the Panthers to a 3-2 road win over the Ottawa Senators.
Olli Jokinen and Mike Van Ryn also scored for Florida and Steve Shields
stopped 30-of-32 shots between the pipes.
Ottawa peppered Shields with 14 shots in the third, but could only get one by
him in the early stages of the stanza. A penalty for too many men on the ice
late in the third didn't help the Ottawa cause, either.
San Jose won the only matchup between the two teams last season and is
unbeaten in the last four meetings (3-0-1).
These two teams have tied in six of the last 12 meetings.
