NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, February 6th (All times eastern)

Carolina Hurricanes (26-22-7) at Montreal Canadiens (29-19-6), 7:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season tonight, when they visit the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

The Hurricanes have dropped four straight games (0-3-1) and are coming off a close setback to the visiting Boston Bruins on Saturday. Zdeno Chara scored the game-winning goal 1:49 into overtime to lift the Bruins over Carolina, 4-3.

Erik Cole had two goals for the Hurricanes, who have also dropped six of seven. Carolina's four-game skid is the longest for the club since it lost five in a row from December 5-15.

The Hurricanes come into Tuesday barely holding onto the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. They have 59 points and are just one ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Carolina, which is 12-12-3 as the visitors this year, begins a three-game road trip tonight.

The Canadiens were able to end a two-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, as they posted a close home win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sheldon Souray's goal with 2:59 remaining in overtime boosted the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 victory at Bell Centre.

Tomas Plekanec tallied twice and added an assist for the Canadiens, who won for the third time in six contests. Souray and Alex Kovalev recorded a pair of assists, while Mark Streit also scored.

David Aebischer stopped 31 shots for his 10th win of the season.

Montreal has 64 points and comes into tonight's action as the fourth-seeded team in the East.

The Habs are 17-8-3 as the hosts this year and are completing a three-game homestand this evening.

Montreal and the Hurricanes have split a pair of meetings this year, but Carolina has taken five of the last six encounters. The 'Canes have also won in each of their last two trips to the Bell Centre.
