Washington Capitals (16-12-7) at Buffalo Sabres (25-7-3), 7 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres hope a three-game homestand can cure their recent struggles, as they host the Washington Capitals tonight at HSBC Arena.
The Sabres have dropped three of four games coming into tonight and were handed an overtime loss by the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Bill Guerin's second goal of the night, coming 1:35 into the extra session, sent the Blues to the 3-2 win.
Daniel Briere notched a pair of assists while Jochen Hecht and Jason Pominville tallied goals for Buffalo, which is still the top team in the Eastern Conference with 53 points.
Goaltender Martin Biron took the loss despite stopping 29 shots.
The Sabres, who are 10-4-2 as the host this season, will also welcome Carolina and Atlanta on this three-game residency.
Washington is coming off a victory, as they beat the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Saturday. Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal and added an assist as the Capitals held on to defeat the Leafs, 3-2, at Air Canada Centre.
Ovechkin has been phenomenal in December, registering 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 10 games this month.
Dainius Zubrus also had a tally and an assist as the Capitals snapped their two-game losing streak. All of Washington's goals came on the power play.
Alexander Semin also scored for the Caps and Olaf Kolzig turned away 35-of-37 shots in the victory.
The Caps, who are 8-4-4 as the visitors this year, wrap up a brief two-game road trip tonight.
Washington beat the Sabres earlier this month in the only meeting between the teams this year. Buffalo has still won seven of nine and eight of the last 13 encounters.
