NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Friday, October 20th (All times eastern)

Carolina Hurricanes (3-3-1) at Buffalo Sabres (6-0-0), 8 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres try to continue their sizzling start tonight when they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to HSBC Arena.

Buffalo has won its first six games to open the season, leaving the club two victories shy of matching the best start in team history. The Sabres have also equaled a club high with 11 straight regular season games dating back to the end of last campaign. Buffalo's last regular season loss was April 7 against Philadelphia.

The Sabres faced those same Flyers on Tuesday and skated off home ice with a staggering 9-1 victory. Maxim Afinogenov scored a goal and added a career-high four assists to spearhead the blowout.

Thomas Vanek added two goals and two assists while Chris Drury scored his seventh goal of the season for Buffalo, which netted six goals in the second period. Derek Roy also found the net on two occasions.

Ryan Miller did his part at the other end, making 37 saves for the Sabres.

Buffalo's offensive attack has managed a whopping 16 goals in the last two games, as the Sabres toppled the NY Rangers 7-4 on Saturday.

The Sabres will visit Boston on Saturday to open a three-game road trip.

Carolina, meanwhile, has won three straight games after losing its first four. On Monday, Justin Williams led the way with his first career hat trick and an assist, and Rod Brind'Amour added a goal and two assists in a 5-1 win over visiting Tampa Bay.

Eight Hurricanes recorded at least one point on the night. Forwards Ray Whitney and Eric Staal each had two assists for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Hurricane netminder Cam Ward stopped 34 shots for his third win of the season.

Carolina will visit the NY Islanders on Saturday.

The Canes and Sabres met on opening night, and Buffalo won a 3-2 shootout affair to spoil Carolina's banner-raising party.
