NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Thursday, December 7th (All times eastern)

Montreal Canadiens (15-8-4) at New York Islanders (14-10-3), 7:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Montreal Canadiens try to end a two-game skid tonight when they visit the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

On Wednesday the Habs opened a brief road trip with a 2-1 overtime loss in New Jersey, as Patrik Elias' power-play goal with 7.3 seconds left in OT lifted the Devils.

Radek Bonk scored and Alexander Perezhogin picked up the lone assist for Montreal, losers in three of its last four overall. Goaltender David Aebischer stopped 29 shots.

The game-winning goal was set up when Montreal's Sheldon Souray was called for hooking with 11.8 seconds remaining.

The Canadiens, who are 10 points behind first-place Buffalo in the Northeast standings, will host the Sabres on Saturday to kick off a four-game homestand.

New York, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak ended in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to visiting Ottawa. Dany Heatley's two goals lifted the Senators.

Andy Hilbert and Jason Blake tallied for the Islanders, while netminder Mike Dunham stopped 31 shots in a losing effort.

Dunham filled in for regular starter Rick DiPietro, who missed the match with a lower body injury. DiPietro will likely be back in net tonight.

The Islanders, who continue to play without captain Alexei Yashin (knee), sit one point behind the first-place Devils in the Atlantic Division race.

New York will host Florida on Saturday.

The Islanders won three of the four meetings with the Habs last season.
