NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, January 31st (All times eastern)

Washington Capitals (18-27-5) at New York Islanders (22-25-3), 7 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The New York Islanders hope to remain on track tonight when they welcome the Washington Capitals to Nassau Coliseum.

On Saturday, Alexei Zhitnik and Mark Parrish scored 20 seconds apart midway through the third period, as the Islanders edged the Boston Bruins, 4-3, at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Mike York and Trent Hunter each scored a goal and added two assists for the Islanders, who have won their last two contests on the heels of a three-game slide. Rick DiPietro was busy in goal, turning aside 41 shots in the victory.

A win tonight would mark the Isles' first three-game winning streak since November 12-16.

The Islanders will host the rival Rangers on Thursday.

Washington, meanwhile, ended a three-game skid with Sunday's 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Dainius Zubrus tallied the game-winning goal late in the third period to lift the Capitals to the home decision.

Olaf Kolzig was brilliant in net with 34 saves for the Capitals.

Jeff Halpern scored the other goal for Washington, while phenom Alexander Ovechkin picked up his 31st assist of the season.

The Capitals will host Toronto on Friday.

The Islanders won the only meeting of the season with the Caps and have taken three in a row versus Washington. However, the Capitals are 12-2-1 (2 losses, 1 tie) in their last 15 trips to Long Island.
